2.2 Emerging Trends in the Types of Conflict and Industrial Sanctions
Increased Use of Social Media in the Workplace
The use of social media in the workplace is fast gaining popularity and this has a great impact on the manner in which workplace conflicts are handled. A 2022 report from Gallup indicates that around 21% of U.S. workers discuss work matters on social media, often posting about their grievances and issues within their work environments (Harter, 2022). This change in the social media engagement of employees has given them the path to bypass traditional channels of the conflict resolution and can openly express their experiences in a broader conversation.
Collective action can be organised through social media (Woo et al., 2022). For example, when employees voice their concerns on platforms such as Twitter about unsafe working environment, the organisation is forced to address the issues more swiftly, due to the widespread attention it receives from the public and media. Very often, social media can also amplify conflict and organisations have additionally been put at risk of losing their reputation if grievances are not addressed in a timely manner. This trend shows that although social media is known to fuel the conflict, it can also build a platform to quickly resolve disputes faster by leading to transparency and accountability in discussing issues on the platform.
