(Solution) 5HR03 Question 9. AC 3.3: Explain at least two approaches to job evaluation and identify the most suitable approach for Mercy Frontier

Solution

Analytical job evaluation

Analytical job evaluation involves subdividing roles into factors which can be valued – for example, knowledge, and problem solving, responsibility, effort and working conditions. Each factor is awarded a score by a panel, the scores are weighted and finally totaled to assign a job to a grade. Although job evaluation continues to be an instrument which can be used to structure internal job value, the quality of the method is dependent on the care exercised regarding the operation of the method and the choice of the factors.

Non-analytical job evaluation

Non-analytical approaches compares the entire jobs rather than the individual factors. Short, simple explanations of these methods are more cost-effective and succinct in a smaller-sized company; however, narrow decisions about the rank of one particular role over another can obscure the reason that it is ranked higher. There is a higher level of tolerance for pay dispersion if there is good understanding and justification for the pay differences, which may be lacking due to inadequate documentation.

CIPD recognises that the various non-analytical ranking and classification systems are not analytical schemes (CIPD, 2025c). Analytical point factor…..
