Solution

i) Article Summary

The article highlights an increasing need for business leaders to shift away from blindly adhering to HR trends and instead focus on fundamental people strategies.  Although diversity, wellness, and wellbeing initiatives are important, the article cautions that an overemphasis on these areas has led to talent management and succession planning being neglected (Rimmer, 2023). For example, such insight contributed to high employee turnover particularly in the post pandemic great resignation, when professionals looked for better career development opportunities.

Today, organisations are now in a candidate-driven job market, where employees place a higher value on growth and learning opportunities as opposed traditional benefits. The article contends that investing in employees, through structured learning and development (L&D) programs, is vital for retaining and achieving long-term success (Rimmer, 2023). Without career progression, employers stand to lose their best talent in two years, particularly Generation Z workers. Ultimately, business leaders with support from HR need to go back to basics by ensuring that talent strategies are comprehensive with emphasis on internal growth as part of broader HR initiatives.

ii) Key Messages

The article’s key message is that HR initiatives must be well balanced with strong talent management strategy to support an organisation’s needs. Although a focus on diversity, wellness and well-being is important, organisations should not leave out succession planning and career development as they are important for employee retention. Additionally, the article draws attention to how the post pandemic workforce has become different, with employees now demanding to have a clear career growth opportunity (Rimmer, 2023). The Great Resignation proved that many people left their jobs because there were no prospects for growth, forcing the job market to become candidate-driven as job seekers started looking at what employers can offer them. To address this, organisations must focus on Learning & Development such that employees feel invested in and valued. Generation Z workers, in particular, expect career progression, and failing to provide this leads to higher turnover and recruiting costs. Ultimately, the key message is that HR and business leaders need to refocus on long-term talent strategies in order to create sustainable organisational success.

iii) Own Suggestions

The article points out to the need to rebalance HR priorities focusing on talent management and succession planning alongside diversity and wellbeing initiatives. To achieve this, organisations must integrate structured career development programs helping to provide employees clear career pathways. In addition, well-being initiative should be linked to learning and development (L&D), helping employees feel both supported and invested in.  During recruitment, it is important that career progression opportunities are explained clearly to candidates, as the article points out that today’s job market is candidate-driven. In order to retain high potential employees who would otherwise be looking for opportunities elsewhere, it is also important to create mentorship programs or internal mobility initiatives. Additionally, HR should continually evaluate the effectiveness of existing talent strategies through feedback mechanisms, ensuring that employee development is aligned to the business goals. For companies to reduce turnover and keep a competitive, engaged workforce, it is necessary to refocus on internal growth.
