Concept of Better Working Lives

According to CIPD (2020a), better working lives is a concept that involves the creation of work environments that enhance employee well-being, engagement and personal development.

Work life balance It concentrates on ensuring that employees are treated with respect, supported and empowered to achieve success both professionally and personally. This includes creating a workplace environment that encourages work-life balance, fairness, and opportunities for development. Better working lives will drive better job satisfaction, less stress and better employee retention that will improve the overall success of the organisation (Acas, 2023).

Ways to Design Better Working Lives

Work-Life Balance Initiatives

The first step towards designing better working lives is the promotion of work-life balance which helps reduce stress and makes employees become more satisfied. For example, flexible work arrangements, including remote working, flexible hours or compressed work weeks, assist employees in balancing personal and professional commitments. This increases employee’s wellbeing by being able to better manage work with health and family needs (Suff, 2019). In addition, wellness promotion such as mental health support, gym membership or stress management programs would boost work life balance. Companies that make flexibility and wellbeing a priority, tend to get higher levels of engagement and retention, as they support and empower their staff to perform at their best, without having to sacrifice their personal life.
