Solution

ParcelCare uses most of its delivery drivers on full-time, permanent contracts, which is safe but restrictive to be able to handle changing demand. For the organisation to work at its best, there must be an analysis of whether alternative forms of contract would better suit the organisation and workers. There are three forms of contract below: part-time contracts, permanent, full-time contracts, and zero-hour contracts;

  1. Permanent, Full-Time Contracts

Positives:

Permanent contracts guarantee the job stability and employment security of the workers, and hence they appeal to drivers who would rather have long-term jobs. Full-time contracts help improve worker dedication, reducing turnover and hiring expenses (Personio, 2024). In addition, the firm gains through the constant availability of the workforce with stable commitment, allowing consistency in production.

Negatives:

Permanent contracts are expensive, though, during times of varying demand since drivers will be on the payroll even during slack business. Overemployment or underemployment occurs, which causes inefficiency. Fixed costs become a cost pressure when delivery volumes suddenly decline.

  1. Part-Time Contracts

Positives:

Part-time work offers flexibility to both the company and the employee. Part-time work gives drivers better work-life balance in order to facilitate balancing of personal commitments. ParcelCare also enables scaling of driver hours to adjust to times of peak demand, offering greater levels of responsiveness in resource management at a lower cost of permanent staff. Part-time work also enables the company to handle a larger number of individuals with different availability.

Negatives:

The downside to part-time arrangements is limited employee job security, which can be a cause for dissatisfaction or turnover. Further, part-time drivers will have fewer company commitment since the hours and benefits are curtailed compared to full-time employees. This could affect morale and performance, particularly during the high-demand periods.
